MRHF Bass Tournament A Success

A fishing tournament in Missouri this year is quite sure to encounter weather comprising one of two elements. Scorching sun and heat or rain. The bass fishermen who had participated in the Moberly Regional Health Foundation's fund-raiser accepted the heat and humidity quite well between the storms during the Fifth Annual Buddy Bass and John Jacks Memorial Fishing Tournament held on June 27, 1998.

Boaters competed in the tournament at the Indian Creek Marina. The total awards purse of the tournament was more than $4,000. The event was cosponsored by Wal-Mart along with the Moberly Area Bass Club and Orscheln Farm and Home.

First place winners of this year's tournament were Mark Steward, of O'Fallon, MO, and Earl Carver, of Marthasville, MO. Their catch was a whopping 15.82 lbs. Second place went to Bob Jany, of Columbia, MO and Shawn Parrish, of Palmyra, MO.

Third Place winners were Jim Medlock, Sr and James Medlock Jr. both of House Springs, MO. Fourth place was earned by Robert Miller, of Dittmer, MO and Rob Jones, of Washington, MO. Fifth place honors went to Jon Brewer, of Kahoka, MO and partner, Terry Jones of Quincy, IL. Sixth place winners were Doug Byrd and Jerold Dubois both of Arnold, MO. And last but not least two of our very own from Randolph County, Jason McKinney and Donnie Palmatory both from Cairo, MO earned Seventh place.

The Big Bass was caught by Ron Baugher of Quincy, IL. His bass weighed in at 6.50 lbs. The second Big Bass weighed 5.51 lbs. and it was caught by Mike Boschert of Warrenton, MO.

Area businesses offered prizes and sponsorships to assist the Moberly Regional Health Foundation in its fund-raising efforts. Moberly Regional Medical Center, Orscheln Farm & Home, Wal-Mart, Moberly Area Bass Club, and Mid-Am Building Supply all assisted with the tournament. Moberly Area Bass Club member, Bob Corn did the officiating.

Jennifer Jacks received a $750.00 check donation from the Moberly Regional Health Foundation Director of Development, Karen Wright. The foundation joined with the Moberly Area Bass Club to sponsor the Fifth Annual Benefit Bass Fishing Tournament in Memory of John Jacks, an avid fisherman who died in a boating accident several years ago. Proceeds went toward the health foundation to assist with community health care and related issues and the established trust fund for Jennifer Jacks.

Wal-Mart Awards Grant

Wal-Mart presented MRHF $1,000 grant. The Moberly Wal-Mart store presented Moberly Regional Health Foundation with a grant in the amount of $1,000 on June 24. The donation is part of the matching grant program funded by the Wal-Mart Foundation.

The MRHF will use the funds to increase the quality of life for area residents by being responsive to health care issues.

"We are thrilled to be able to support a variety of causes through funds raised by this organization and our associates," said Jim Taylor, Store Manager. "The money will be utilized for programs in our community and we are glad to help them out. It is just part of Wal'Mart's ongoing commitment to our communities where we conduct business."

In 1997, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., contributed more than $81 million to Children's Miracle Network, United Way agencies and local non-profit organizations in the communities they serve.

K.C. Chief Members Played In Benefit Basketball Game

Members of the Kansas City Chiefs came to Moberly to play in a benefit basketball game. It was an evening of high-flying excitement on the hardwood floors of the new Moberly Area Community College Activity Center. The game was the first event hosted in the newly constructed multipurpose facility at the college.

Proceeds of the game on June 12 supported the scholarships the Foundation awards area students each who major in a healthcare field.

"Score Points Against Drugs" was the theme for the game. The members of the Chiefs team played against the Randolph County All-Star Team. The All-Star team was coached by Lawrence Rucker. Members of the team were: David Dawson, Kelly Shelby, Chad Kilgore, Brad Jaecques, Greg Buescher, John Cochran, Kenny Seifert, Mike Aulbur, Kevin Bucher, and Brad Holcomb. Also named to the team was Josh Rathburn, a1998 Higbee graduate who was killed in an auto accident just a few weeks prior to the game. A team jersey was presented to the Rathburn family in a special recognition ceremony during the evening.

Prior to the game, a member of the Chiefs, Danan Hughes, spoke to the crowd about the negative aspects of drug and alcohol abuse and the importance of staying in school and respecting your parents.

The game provided an entertaining environment for all ages. Several spectators were chosen to play ball during the game as well. The Chiefs also participated in an autograph session during half-time. This was a great opportunity for people who cannot attend a Chiefs football game due to such circumstances as cost, distance to travel, or ticket availability.

The Title Sponsor of the event was Moberly Regional Medical Center. One of the benefits of being the title sponsor was the organization received a football signed by the Kansas City Chiefs and a one hour player appearance for employees and families to obtain an autograph.

The sales promotion generated $2,460.00 Coach Light have helped a number of organizations by raising monies through various Beanie Baby fund-raiser drives.

Why I Invest In The Health Foundation

For Randolph County to succeed and grow, it takes a commitment from each of its residents to strive for the best and explore options to achieve our potential. I've seen our community grow and along with this growth comes an awareness of unmet needs in the community. I feel that by contributing to the Moberly Regional Health Foundation, I support an organization that addresses unmet health care needs, and seeks avenues to improve the community and provides scholarships to educate the youth who will provide for the success of Randolph County in the upcoming years. I hope that everyone will come to appreciate the value of investing in our community and the Health Foundation. An investment in today, makes the future very bright and rewarding.

Stamp Honoring Philanthropy To Be Issued

The United States Postal Service will issue a stamp honoring philanthropy on October 7, 1998. The Stamp will depict a bee pollinating a flower, representing the giving and sharing that occurs between the two parties of a philanthropic gift. Appropriately, the words "Giving and Sharing - an American Tradition" will appear on the stamp. "It is very important that we raise public awareness of the stamp because at the same time, we are raising the awareness of philanthropy," said Karen Wright, Director of Development of Moberly Regional Health Foundation.
