 History

The Moberly Regional Health Foundation incorporated in 1980, was formerly affiliated with the Moberly Regional Medical Center (MRMC), serving as the fund-raising arm of the hospital which provided an avenue to purchase major equipment. The Foundation also raised enough funds to get the Care Van up and going as it is today and provided the start-up cost for the Downtown Athletic Club. Both of which are fulfilling needs in the community.

In October 1993, the hospital was purchased by Community Health Systems, a for-profit business. In order to maintain its not-for-profit status, the Foundation separated from the hospital. The Foundation has no direct affiliation with the hospital now. However, it does provide a small office for the Director of Development of the Health Foundation and there is a close working relationship. We had to change our name and change our focus to community health care and related needs that fall within the Mission Statement. Since the change we have provided assistance for several programs and organizations.

Our most recent project assisted the Moberly Fire Department in the purchase of a Thermal Imaging System which is a camera that mounts on a firefighter's helmet and allows a firefighter to see heat-generating images such as human bodies and pets or fires through walls or thick smoke.

Another significant project was being able to provide the program start up cost for the development of Safe Passage, a domestic violence shelter. Safe Passage provides safe shelter at no cost to victims of domestic violence in Mid-Missouri. Services are available to victims who are in immediate danger regardless of their county of residence.

Many other smaller community health care or related needs have been addressed as well.

The Foundation board of directors comprises a cross-section of community leaders, physicians, business owners, and citizens of the area. Projects are carefully considered in light of the community-focused mission statement and purpose.

It is the intent of the Foundation to keep all money raised in the local area where possible providing local services.

Instruments of Giving

Cash and appreciated investments. The majority of gifts come in the form of checks made out to Moberly Regional Health Foundation. But giving can take many forms. Giving assets such as stocks, bonds or real estate can offer a wide range of tax advantages.

Life insurance policies. Paid-up policies that you no longer need are an unrealized asset. They can represent a substantial contribution to the foundation.

Bequests. Including the Health Foundation in your will is an especially effective way to help others. Your attorney can draw up your will to ensure that your goals are achieved.

Mission Statement

Moberly Regional Health Foundation is a philanthropic organization, dedicated to addressing the health care needs of the area by being responsive to a broad range of health care and related needs.

Scholarship Applications Being Accepted

The Moberly Regional Health Foundation is pleased to serve as a Foundation which encourages and funds educational health care opportunities. Because of this commitment, the Foundation Board of Directors has designated $10,000 in scholarship assistance for 1998. Applications are being taken now for scholarships for the upcoming school year. Area high schools have applications on file. There is also a general scholarship for those who are not graduating high school seniors.

In addition, there are scholarship funds for the Will Ben Sims Memorial Scholarship. Those applications may be at City Bank or the Little Dixie Regional Library in Moberly or a Chariton County Bank in Brunswick.

The Foundation will also continue to fund the Lois Massman Nursing Scholarship and three nursing scholarships for the Moberly Area Community College.

If a student is chosen who does not need the funds due to other scholarships covering fees and books, the scholarship may be re-awarded to another person. The deadline for submission is March 27, 1998.

Guidelines for Grant Seekers from the Moberly Regional Health Foundation

These guidelines are quite simple. You must be a not-for-profit organization whose request is health care related or have an unmet need. Submit a letter to the board of directors with your request of funds. These guidelines are just one part of an exciting and ongoing effort by the foundation to structure the way we do things to be more effective - - without losing the best qualities of what we do. Our board and staff have taken a close look at every aspect of our organization to identify ways we could make the Health Foundation's leadership role clearer and more effective in the community.

Goals

The Foundation serves to increase the quality of life for area residents by being responsive to health care issues.

The Foundation, as a philanthropic organization, is guided by the greater good of the community and seeks ways in which individuals can support the Foundation's efforts through such activities as annual fund giving, special events, organizing specific programs, establishing endowments and planned giving programs.

The Foundation values and encourages quality of education for the health care professions and supports a substantial scholarship program for area students majoring in health care.

The Foundation identifies areas of unmet needs and seeks solutions to meet those needs.

The Foundation, where possible, may serve as a nucleus to supply start-up costs for programs that fall within the criteria as set forth by the board of directors.

Why I Contribute

"There are many reasons why I contribute to the Moberly Regional Health Foundation. Although I do not live in Moberly, I do come for a full day once every week, on Wednesday to do an outreach dermatology clinic and have been doing this for almost 4 years now. I feel committed to the community, quite frankly, part of the community, and giving to the Moberly Regional Health Foundation is one small way that I can give back to Moberly. I have the pleasure of seeing patients from every age group in my practice and have gotten to know many families well. It has been a thoroughly fulfilling experience for me. I plan to continue my commitment to the Moberly community and I feel that the Moberly Regional Health Foundation embodies values I would like to support, including promotion of health care, education, and safety."
