Health Foundation Funds Drive

The Health Foundation is lending its support to fund a drive to purchase a Cairns Infrared Imaging System for the Moberly Fire Department. This Effort is to compliment the works of Lori Vitt and other volunteers who have already raised several thousand dollars toward equipment.Cairns Infrared Imaging System

The $25,000 device, known as IRIS, is a 7.3 pound camera and monitor that mounts on a firefighter's helmet and allows a firefighter to see heat-generating images such as human bodies and pets or fires through walls or thick smoke.

Moberly Fire Cheif David Lacy says, "the firefighters can reduce by two-thirds the amount of time needed to find fire victims or spot a fire through a wall, saving lives and reducing damage with this device."

Cairns and GEC Marconi Avionics, a British corporation which provided infrared imaging devices for Desert Storm troops, teamed up to develop the technology and the only infrared imaging device available that mount on a helmet.

For information on this lifesaving device or for persons who want to donate to the fund can send checks to the Moberly Regional Health Foundation, P.O. Box 3000, Moberly, Mo 65270, or contact MRHF office at 816-269-3046.

The Moberly Regional Health Foundation awarded several scholarships this past spring to area students. The scolarship program is designed to encourage the study of health care and related professions. Applicants had to be a permanent resident of or plan to attend school in Randolph County in order to be eligible for the awards. The scolarships are intended to be used for tuition and books.

Area high school's seniors earning scholarships in 1997 are: Jared McKinney, Cairo; Aaron Summers, Westran; Jamie Hough, Westran; Michelle Buxton, Moberly Vo-Tech; Devon Swetman, Moberly.

The Foundation continued to fund the Lois Massman Nursing Scholarship and three nursing scolarships for the Moberly Area Community College. This year's recipients were Joanne Simmerman, Lois Massman Award; Samantha Diab, Anna Walker and Linda DeRouse received the nursing scolarships.

Funds for Hepatitis B Vaccine

The Health Foundation has contributed funds to the Community Day Care Learning Center, Inc. to receive Hepatitis B vaccines for several staff members to be in compliance with OSHA guidelines and workmen's comp standards.

Pam Holman, director of the Community Day Care, says, "our workman's comp insurance carrier requested our staff to be immunized with the Hepatitis B vaccine to insure protection from bloodborne pathogens. We appreciate the Foundation's support as we set out to seek alternative funding for this unexpected request."

The Community Day Care Learning Center is a licensed non-profit child care facility which has served the families of Moberly and the surrounding area for twenty-six years.

MADD Receives Funding

The Moberly Regional Health Foundation approved a grant to assist with start-up costs of a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Community Action Team in Moberly. The funds went toward any expenses in the development of this team and expenses in carrying out special activities.

Ada Twenter, Director of the Nort Central Missouri Safety Council, says, "during the past year I have had several requests to start a "MADD" group in this area. We are thrilled that the Moberly Regional Health Foundation has decided to help fund this request. Sometimes it is really difficult to come up with the funds and it's nice to know there is support in our community."

"The Health Foundation is pleased to help fund activities such as this and other unmet needs in our community." says Howard Fleming, Moberly Regional Health Foundation board chairman.

Meet The Board

This newsletter's "Meet the Board" column focuses on Health Foundation board member Tim Brubaker. Involved with the Foundation for a couple of years, Brubaker serves on the finance committee and helps in other capacities. Tim Brubaker

Brubaker says, "I think one of the strongest programs we have in the local community relative to health care issues is the work the Foundation does in addressing unmet needs. The support given to the Local Fireman's Project is a prime example of the Foundation being responsive to community needs."

Bass Tournament Nears

Entries are coming in and plans are underway for the Moberly Regional Health Foundation Bass and Buddy Fishing Tournament to be held at Mark Twain Lake on August 16th. We anticipate more than 200 fishermen will register for the day long competition.

Fishing LureCommittee member planner Bob Corn said, "The fourth annual event looks to be very promising as we receive support from many area businesses and the enthusiasm of local fishermen as they return year after year in hopes to snag a prize winning bass."

The bass tournament is fast becoming one of the major fund raisers for the Foundation. This year, some of the proceeds will be used in assisting with the purchase of the imaging equipment for the Moberly Fire Department, while the rest will be given to a trust fund for Jennifer Jacks, the daughter of the late John Jacks, an avid fisherman who died in a boating accident three years ago.

For more information or to obtain an entry form please call 816-269-3046. This year's event is partially sponsored by Wal Mart, Moberly Area Bass Club and Mid-MO Bass Club.

Volunteers Needed

As a non-for-profit agency, the Moberly Regional Health Foundation relies on volunteers to accomplish much of its work.Volunteering Is Caring The Board of Directors which serves as the policy-making body gives time and energy in helping the Foundation identify and achieve meaningful goals. While not always recognized as such, this is one form of volunteering.

There are other avenues of service for volunteering as well. Certainly, committee structures are one way the Foundation makes well planned decisions in deciding how to utilize its resources. Serving on a committee can be rewarding and fun.

Occasionally the Foundation has specific projects for which assistance is needed such as helping with putting labels on newsletters for mailing or stuffing envelopes. If you would like to know more about volunteer opportunities please call the office at 269-3046.
