Board Elects New President

Moberly Regional Health Foundation has elected officers for 1997. Serving as President is Howard Fleming. Fleming succeeds David Bentley who served as president from 1993 to 1997. Vice President is Helen Johnson and Secretary Treasurer is Marva Harris.

Fleming has been on the Foundation board since its inception in 1980. He has served on many committees, and has been a guiding force for the Foundation's work. A native of Moberly, Fleming lived for a time in St. Louis and returned to Moberly in the early ‘70's to raise his family with his wife Sara. They have three children and one grandchild.

Other board members include: Tim Brubaker; Mike Cook; Dr. J. Will Fleming; Richard Knaebel; Tim Jeffries; Dan McKay; Don Orscheln; Bill Reid; Wynne Rutledge; Dr. Robert Tompson; John Weant and Dr. Alan Weaver.

Williams to Leave Health Foundation

Director of Development, Mary Kay Williams, will leave the Health Foundation the end of March. Williams will be moving with her family to Ocala, Florida.

"I have found my work with the Health Foundation the past two and one half years challenging and fulfilling," says Williams. "When I started, none of us was certain where we were going. The Board of Directors, Moberly Regional Medical Center under the direction of Dan McKay, and others in the community have been instrumental in helping to steer a path for the Foundation."

Williams says this is an exciting time for the Foundation with the appointment of the Vision Team to examine and make recommendations for long term service. Under Williams' tenure the Health Foundation started a domestic violence program, Safe Passage Domestic Violence Crisis Intervention Services, one of the largest of its kind in out state Missouri. This was the largest program start-up of the Moberly Regional Health Foundation since the development of the Downtown Athletic Club started in 1992. Williams is being replaced by Karen Wright who joined the Foundation in mid-February.

Vision Team to Make Recommendations

An ad hoc committee has been appointed by the Moberly Regional Health Foundation Board of Directors to examine community health care needs and make recommendations for long term plans for the Health Foundation. Headed by Bill Reid, the group is seeking information from around the country to learn what similar organizations have done who have separated from hospitals.

According to Director of Development, Mary Kay Williams, finding information has been a challenge. "It appears we are one of the first health care foundations to split from a primary care facility and attempt to remain a viable philanthropic organization without providing direct service."

This puts Moberly and the Foundation at the forefront of finding creative ways to address community needs. "We will be the leaders and, by example, can show how communities can find ways to address the multitude of issues that face us all. We can't rely entirely on government to take care of our needs and communities must be willing to find ways to assist. Moberly should be very proud of the care and concern of its residents. It is a very giving community," Williams continued.

The Vision Team anticipates developing a forum to invite community input for long range planning.

Bass Tournament Scheduled

The 1997 Moberly Regional Health Foundation Bass & Buddy Fishing Tournament is scheduled for August 16. An estimated 220 fishermen will enter the day long fishing competition. Proceeds from the tournament are used for assisting with community health care and related needs and a portion of the entry fees assists with the John Jacks Memorial.

This year, proceeds will be used in part, for assisting with the purchase of a specialized piece of imaging equipment for the Fire Department. This effort is to compliment the works of Lori Vitt and other volunteers who have already raised over $5,000 toward the necessary $25,000 for the equipment.

Wright Heads Foundation as Director of Development

By Karen Wright

To those of you who do not know me, I would like to introduce myself. I am Karen Wright, the new Director of Development for the Health Foundation. I know it will be a tough assignment following Mary Kay Williams. I look forward to serving the foundation and its many activities.

I grew up near Mark Twain Lake in Perry Mo. I have an Associate of Arts degree from Moberly Area Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Columbia College.

I feel my past employment history and experience will enhance my abilities in my new position. With my experience in human resources, sales and my position with my most recent employer, Moberly Regional Medical Center, I feel I have acquired a combination of experience and relationships with the medical community that will be beneficial in this area.

My husband, Steve , and I have been married for five years. I also have a stepson, Matthew. Steve and I have both lived in Randolph County for several years and Steve has been a long time employee of Associated Electric. These past few years I have been fortunate to serve in different capacities as either a board member or officer for area organizations. I currently serve as president of the Moberly Area Community College (MACC) Alumni Association, am a board member of the American Diabetes Association, and incoming president for Randolph County American Red Cross.

I look forward to the challenge as the Director of Development of Moberly Regional Health Foundation. For information or to share ideas about how the Health Foundation can better serve the community, feel free to phone me at 269-3046.

Web Page Developed

Joining the super highway of information, Moberly Regional Health Foundation has developed a web page. Designed by Chris Sparks, of CMSoft located in Sedalia, the web page is intended to let others know about the Foundation's work. It also contains related local and health care links for further access.

Board President, Howard Fleming says, " We believe any time we can impart education or information to the community, we are providing a valuable service. Utilizing state of the art communication tools allows us the opportunity to provide information easily and to the appropriate market."

In addition to the assistance of Chris Sparks, Mike Mattox, MCMSYS has been helpful in setting up the pages and is donating space to the Health Foundation for the web page. The Moberly Regional Health Foundation web page address is: moberlymo.com/foundation The city of Moberly has a web page that includes organizations and churches and will also have Yellow Pages for businesses. Mattox of MCMSYS says, "The internet is one of the best ways to get information out about local events and resources in a community. I know people who have found jobs and relocated by utilizing the net. There is nothing that a person can't find and it's literally at one's fingertips." Mattox says he is pleased to assist non-profit organizations by offering free space when he can. For more information about the internet call MCMSYS at 269-8088. Categories of the Health Foundation's web pages include the mission statement, biographical information about the Board of Directors, current issues of the newsletter and other items.

Health Foundation Hosts Docs' Spouses Get-together

On February 27, 1997 the Moberly Regional Health Foundation hosted a meeting for area physicians' spouses to explain about the Health Foundation's work. The meeting also served to help the newer physicians spouses get to know one another.

Other meetings will follow to begin organizing so spouses of physicians will have a network to meet one another and to serve as a support system for each other. Representing the Health Foundation were Board President Howard Fleming, Directors of Development, Mary K. Williams and incoming Director of Development, Karen Wright. Representing the Moberly Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees was Karen Berding. Lori Turk helped coordinate the event.

Christmas Collectable Program a Success

The Moberly Regional Health Foundation Christmas Collectable Ornament program has been completed. A four-year series, the collectibles has paid tribute to several of Moberly's distinctive assets.

The first year featured the steam engine. Moberly, known as the Magic City, was made famous as a railroad town. The black & white mat ornament was a perfect starter for the four-year collectable edition.

The second year was the Burkholder O'Keefe house, the only home in Randolph County on the National Historic Register. Mrs. Marie O'Keefe graciously allowed the Health Foundation to use her home as its theme. The third year was the acclaimed Rothwell Park known for its scenic walk- ways and its beautiful lakes. And, last year, the Omar Bradley Memorial was chosen. Bradley was the last five star general who served in World War II. The Bradley Memorial is located at Rothwell Park with the Dough Boy Memorial honoring vets from World War I nearby.

In an unusual move, the Board of the Health Foundation voted to assist the Bradley Memorial Project by donating to them, a portion of each 1996 ornament sold.

A few previous ornaments of all previous years are still remaining and can be purchased by arrangement. For information, contact the Moberly Regional Health Foundation. The Chamber of Commerce and the Randolph County Historical Society are looking into the possibility of providing continued ornaments or a similar collectible series to honor the many attractions of the Moberly area.

Bake Sale to benefit Firemen

The Health Foundation will host its second annual Bake Sale to be held at Wal Mart on Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds from this year's bake sale will be used to help purchase the Thermal Imaging Equipment so firemen can see through smoke in a burning building. This effort is in cooperation with earlier efforts organized by Lori Vitt who has already raised several thousand dollars for the equipment.

Chief Lacy of the Moberly Fire Department says he is pleased to have the support of the Health Foundation to purchase this very important piece of equipment. Many firemens' wives along with other volunteers, will be baking items for the bake sale and orders will be taken ahead of time. Karen Wright says, "Our Volunteer Coordinator, Melinda Stanley, has done an outstanding job making phone calls, coordinating the day of activities and has been busy baking already. We appreciate all her efforts." To place an order for baked goods, contact Karen Wright at 269-3046 before March 21.

Scholarship Applications Being Accepted

Applications are being taken for several scholarships for the upcoming school year. Area high schools have applications on file. There is also a general scholarship for those who are not graduating high school seniors. In addition, there are scholarship funds for the Will Ben Sims Memorial Scholarship. Those applications may be picked up at City Bank or the Little Dixie Regional Library in Moberly or at Chariton County Bank in Brunswick.

If a student is chosen who does not need the funds due to other scholarships covering fees and books, the scholarship may be re-awarded to another person.

The deadline for submission is March 28, 1997.
